Red Tour Taylor Swift: Why It Was the Most Successful and Memorable Tour of Her Career

The Red Tour was the third concert tour by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, in support of her fourth studio album, Red (2012). The tour started on March 13, 2013, at CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska and concluded on June 12, 2014, at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The tour received 1.7 million attendees and grossed $150.2 million in revenue.

The tour received positive reviews from music critics, many praising Swift's performances. As well as being Swift's most successful tour at the time, the Red Tour also received four tour award nominations, of which it won one.

Swift told Billboard: "Of course, you know the tour will be a big representation of this record". "I'm so excited to see what songs the fans like the most and which ones jump to the forefront, because that's the first step. We always see which songs are really the passionate songs and the ones the fans are freaking out over the most, and those are the ones that are definitely in the set list. I can't wait for that."[3]

The tour received positive reviews from many music critics, with many citing Swift's atmospheric performances as a specific area of praise. Writing for the Rolling Stone, Rob Sheffield praised Swift's "emotional excess [and] musical reach", stating "...[n]o other pop auteur can touch her right now."[7] Rebecca Nicholson of The Guardian gave a 5-star review, stating Swift was "staggeringly nice" and a "consummate crowd pleaser".[8] Digital Spy contributor Emma Dibdin stated the tour combined "whimsical spectacle with Swift's trademark emotional intimacy," and that it "capitalises on exactly what makes Swift such a powerful figure for her audience, the sincere blend of aspirational and relatable."[9] In a more negative review, Rebecca Ford of the Hollywood Reporter stated that the intros before specific songs that, while "an appropriate fit for the audience," felt long and "brought down the energy of the show." Ford also mentioned that while Swift's voice "has gotten stronger over the years... [it] still has a habit of faltering or being too soft to hear over the band."[10]

Swift became the first solo female artist in 20 years to headline a national stadium tour through Australia, with the last being Madonna's The Girlie Show in 1993.[14] Swift performed to a crowd of over 40,900 fans at the Sydney Football Stadium in Sydney, Australia, becoming the first female artist in history to sell out the stadium since it was opened in 1988.[15]

The Red Tour also became the highest-grossing tour by a country artist in history at the time, bringing in $150 million and surpassing the prior record held by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's co-headlining Soul2Soul II Tour, which earned $141 million.[16]

"I'm so excited to see what songs the fans like the most and which ones jump to the forefront, because that's the first step. Swift used Tom Petty's "American Girl" as her entrance song on her previous tour but now takes the stage to Lenny Kravitz's version of "American Woman". She sings a cover of The Lumineers's "Ho Hey" nightly, intertwined with her own "Stay Stay Stay".

The stage for the Red tour is when Swift really started getting creative with her stage designs and therefore, add a more evolved look to her live shows. In fact, the shape of the Red Tour stage is very unique, it is in a U shape, with two pits, divided by a catwalk within the U stage. This permitted for fans to feel closer to Taylor during the show and, have many interactions.

On The RED Tour, Taylor is currently slated to headline 58 shows in 45 cities in 29 states and 3 provinces in 2013. The tour will kick-off on March 13 in Omaha, Nebraska and continue through September. Acclaimed singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, whose duet with Taylor from her RED album, "Everything Has Changed," has already reached the #1 position atop iTunes all-genre Top Songs chart, will be a special guest on all of the shows on the tour.

The RED Tour will be produced and promoted by The Messina Group (TMG). At Taylor's request, every show will include tickets priced at under $50. The first tickets will go on sale on November 16th, and on-sale information is available now at www.taylorswift.com and www.abcnews.com. TMG is a partner of AEG Live, one of the top live entertainment companies in the world, which produces world tours featuring internationally renowned artists and regional concerts and festivals.

To be fair to Swift, the wild hair tosses, audience-baiting Mona Lisa smiles and Angelina Jolie-esque leg poses fed right into the massive spectacle that was the "Red" tour (named after her mega-blockbuster 2012 album), which had a final, 16-song, hour-and-fifty-minute stadium show Saturday in front of 50,000 people. The two dozen musicians and dancers were a comparatively modest element for an event that featured fireworks, Jumbotron dazzle and lavish costumes inspired by everything from classic Hollywood glamour to "Alice in Wonderland." Drummers flew up and down like three-story Yo-Yos, their drums lit up to the sounds of their wallops, for "Holy Ground." And Swift provoked double-takes with a split-second, on-stage costume change behind a wall of swirling dancers for "I Knew You Were Trouble.," from a formal, white and gold-dusted top with a wavy, leg-length skirt, to an edgy black romper with brick-busting heels. Swift too changed her attitude mid-song, convincingly transitioning from smitten naivete to wicked provocation (while upholding the show's PG rating).

Here are some of the things that were literally red during the "Red" tour stop: fireworks, Swift's lips, Dorothy-style slippers, cowboy boots, a circus ringleader jacket, a classic Tinseltown gown, a glittery microphone, glittery electric guitars, a glittery stool, a glittery violin, her violinist's hair.

Right now, Swift's tour schedule includes stops in 29 states and three Canadian provinces. The tour will begin March 13 in Omaha, Neb. and will feature special guest singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran. Show venues include nine stadiums.

"So I have some big news. My new album is finally out. I am beyond excited to tell you [that] I am going back out on tour next year," Swift said during the '20/20 All Access Nashville' special.

Swift set the bar incredibly high on her Speak Now Tour. She wrote lyrics on her arms in black Sharpie marker, which had fans seeking out their hidden meanings. She covered regional artists in the markets in which she performed, and she even invited a bevy of guests to share the stage with her. It was one of the best-selling tours of the year.

Both nights in Omaha are sold-out, as are most nights on Swift's tour, full stadiums' worth of tickets having been snatched up within minutes of going on sale back in November, prompting the addition of more dates not on the original itinerary.

The 45-city tour will kick off in Omaha, Neb. on March 13. Ed Sheeran, who sings with Taylor on "Everything Has Changed" will join her on the tour dates. See if Taylor will be performing in a city near you in the full list of dates below.

Unquestionably the most popular pop star on the planet, Taylor Swift brought her all-conquering, all-singing-and-dancing, almighty Red tour to the O2 over the weekend. Those who wondered why the 24-year-old, Nashville-based, Pennsylvania-born stockbroker's daughter has eclipsed Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and the rest need wonder no more.

A week after releasing her latest album, 1989, Taylor Swift has finally announced dates for an upcoming world tour. 57 dates have been released so far throughout North America and Europe. Those dates span from the first show on May 20 at CenturyLink Center in Bossier City, Louisiana to October 31 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida. The pre-sale for Taylor Swift tickets will start on November 4 for European dates and November 7 for concerts in North America.

In just six Australia and New Zealand dates during "Red," Swift grossed just under $18 million. On those dates, Swift became the first female solo artist to headline a national stadium tour in Australia since Madonna in 1993. Playing 12 shows in Australia at the end of the tour, the "1989" gross would already be around the impressive $200 million mark. This is also without including an Asian tour dates, in which she played seven shows and grossed $10 million in 2013. 2ff7e9595c
