As the Distance and MSA Librarian for the CMU Libraries, I specialize in providing research assistance to students enrolled in off-campus and online classes, with a focus on the Master of Science in Administration (MSA) program. I've been assisting MSA students with library research since 2006, and I'm committed to helping bridge the gap between distance and online students and the information resources you need to be successful in your area of study. Based at the Troy Center in Michigan, I'm the designated librarian for the Metro Detroit and Greater Michigan centers, including the Mt. Pleasant campus.
The first heating plant constructed on campus was built in 1905, when school officials authorized the construction a central heating plant located away from the other two main buildings and on the east end of campus, near the present-day location of Smith Hall. The plant was coal-fired, and Normal boys often helped unload coal from railcars and transport it across campus to the plant.
By the early 2000s, Washington Court continued to serve the campus community. Married students and families, visiting faculty, and international students were some of the most common occupants. In 2006, the university announced plans to demolish part of Washington Court in preparation for construction of the Education and Human Services Building and an adjacent parking lot. The western two quads were demolished, although the eastern quad remained for several more years. In summer 2014, crews from Clark Construction began demolition on the remaining four buildings that had once made up the Washington Court complex in preparation for construction of CMU's new Biosciences Building.
The Global Campus Library Services (GCLS) department at Central Michigan University is one of the oldest, continuously running programs of its kind in the United States. Established in 1976 in collaboration with the Central Michigan University Libraries, GCLS delivers a full range of library materials and services to students and instructors associated with the university's off-campus programs. GCLS acts as a link between the resources of the Park Library and more than 7,000 CMU students and faculty engaged at 13 remote campuses across the state of Michigan and more than 40 instructional sites across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. A growing number of online courses are also served by the department. Services offered include reference assistance via telephone, web form, email, and chat software as well as online and face-to-face instructional presentations by GCLS librarians, electronic document delivery of requested materials from CMU's collections and beyond, and assistance obtaining copyright clearance for faculty teaching in off-campus programs.
GCLS provides leadership in the field of distance library services by organizing and hosting a biennial conference devoted to the topic of distance library services. Since 1982, the Distance Library Services Conference has been held as a way promote communication and learning among librarians, educators, and administrators who are committed to providing library services for academic programs offered and students enrolled beyond their campuses and online. Robert Trullinger, director of the Institute for Personal and Career Development at Central Michigan University, discussed the worker/student and the increasing impact of broad-based private sector reimbursement programs on the way academic institutions offer programs off-campus. He predicted that in the near future the successful institutions will be those that promote lifelong learning and diversify their methods of delivery courses and support services. Trullinger noted that innovative ideas for conducting educational programs were being put forward by workers, unions, and managers who all seem eager to renegotiate some of the policies and procedures to which educators have adhered. As a part of his presentation, Trullinger offered suggestions to librarians for enhancing services to the non-traditional learner and encouraged the conference participants to be aggressive in making every effort to assure first-rate library services for all off-campus credit programs.
The concurrent paper session covered a wide range of topics, including specific case studies of library support development, perceptions of students in regard to library services off-campus, instructional resources as a support function of the library off-campus, online searching for the off- campus student, and the library as a piece of the off-campus puzzle. Also discussed in these sessions were faculty perspectives, separate library collections for off-campus sites, models for providing library services, interactive communications technology and the off-campus student, and the challenges and rewards for the library of working with part-time faculty.
